A website that takes UPI: Razorpay, Cashfree or PhonePe?

To take UPI on your website, you connect a payment gateway such as Razorpay, Cashfree, PhonePe or PayU, which shows UPI (QR, UPI ID and app intent) alongside cards and netbanking and confirms each payment to your site automatically. An online store with UPI checkout costs from ₹1,50,000; adding it to an existing site is quoted after a look at the code.

Which gateway should you choose?

All the large Indian gateways offer UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets. The differences that matter are onboarding time, settlement speed, fees for your mix of methods, and how well their webhooks and refunds work. Fees and terms change, so we compare the current published pricing for your expected volume before you apply.

Kodinav runs Cashfree in production for Lighthouse Publication's bookstore, so the integration, webhooks and refund flow are proven, not theoretical.

  • Razorpay: wide method support, mature dashboard and subscriptions
  • Cashfree: settlement options and a payouts API
  • PhonePe Payment Gateway: strong UPI brand recognition with customers
  • PayU: long-established, common with larger merchants

Why not just show a UPI QR code?

A static UPI QR is free and fine for a shop counter or an invoice (our free UPI QR generator makes one). On a website it means checking every payment by hand and matching it to an order. A gateway confirms payment instantly, marks the order paid, handles failed and pending payments, and issues refunds from the dashboard.

What a proper integration includes

The parts that break in quick integrations are the ones after the customer pays:

  • Webhook verification, so an order is marked paid only when the gateway says so
  • Handling UPI's pending state (the customer approves in their app minutes later)
  • Idempotent orders: a double tap never charges twice
  • Refunds and GST-ready invoices from the admin
  • The gateway account in your company's name; your data stays yours

Questions about UPI on websites

No. The customer pays the order amount; any gateway fee is charged to you, the merchant, under your gateway plan.

Gateways set their own KYC requirements and some onboard individuals or sole proprietors. Check with the gateway; we handle the technical integration.

Yes, through UPI AutoPay mandates or card subscriptions where the gateway supports them, which suits coaching institutes and memberships.

It varies by gateway and by how complete your documents are; we start building in parallel, so approval rarely delays launch.
