An online shop that takes FPS, PayMe and Octopus
Hong Kong customers expect to pay by FPS, PayMe, Octopus, AlipayHK, WeChat Pay or card, and a shop that only takes cards loses some of them at checkout. A custom online store wired to a gateway that offers these methods costs HK$32,000 – 63,000 and takes 4–8 weeks.

Which payment methods does a Hong Kong shop need?
Cards (Visa, Mastercard, plus Apple Pay and Google Pay) for everyone, and at least one local method. Which local ones matter depends on who buys: FPS suits higher-value orders and business customers, PayMe and Octopus suit everyday purchases, AlipayHK and WeChat Pay suit mainland visitors.
Only 13% of the Hong Kong small-business homepages in our 2026 study even mentioned a local payment method.
How do the payments reach your bank?
Through a payment gateway: one contract, one integration, many methods. Global gateways such as Stripe and Checkout.com, and Hong Kong providers such as AsiaPay (PayDollar), offer local methods alongside cards; which ones, and at what fees, changes, so we compare current terms for your volume before you sign anything.
For a small shop starting out, a static FPS QR on the order confirmation (paid by the customer in their banking app, confirmed by you) is a workable first step. It is free, but it needs a manual check of each payment.
- The gateway and merchant accounts are opened in your company's name
- Payment confirmations update the order automatically (webhooks), so nothing is marked paid by hand
- Refunds and partial refunds from the admin
- Receipts in English and Chinese
Shopify, SHOPLINE or a custom shop?
A hosted platform is cheaper to start and fine for a standard catalogue. A custom build is worth it when you need checkout rules the platform can't do (bundles, deposits, B2B pricing, bookings with payment), want no monthly platform fee, or want the site fast and fully yours. We tell you honestly which fits.
Questions about Hong Kong online shop payments
Yes, with a static FPS QR code or your FPS ID shown at checkout, but you must check each payment arrived before shipping. A gateway that offers FPS confirms payments automatically.
Each gateway sets its own fees per method and volume, and they change. We compare current published rates for your expected sales before you choose.
Gateways set their own onboarding requirements, usually a business registration and a local bank account. Check with the provider; we help with the technical setup, not the legal side.
Yes. Product pages, checkout and emails in both languages, each with its own URL so both rank in search.
