Web hosting and domains for Hong Kong businesses: what to choose and what it costs
A Hong Kong business website needs a domain registered in the company's own name and hosting that is fast for visitors in Hong Kong. A .com.hk domain costs HK$200 a year direct from HKDNR (it requires a Hong Kong Business Registration or a non-Hong Kong company registration certificate), a .hk HK$250; hosting for a small business site typically runs from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a year. The most expensive mistake is letting an agency hold the domain.

.com.hk, .hk or .com?
.com.hk signals a registered Hong Kong company and needs proof: a copy of your Business Registration Certificate, or a Certificate of Registration of a non-Hong Kong company. .hk is shorter. .com is international and a good fit if you sell abroad. Many businesses register two and point one at the other. Check current eligibility on HKIRC's site before you apply.
What good hosting looks like for a Hong Kong site
- Fast for Hong Kong visitors: servers in Hong Kong or Singapore, or a global CDN
- Free SSL (HTTPS) that renews automatically
- Daily backups you can restore, and uptime monitoring
- The account in your company's name, with auto-renew and a card that won't expire
- Business email kept separate from the website, so moving one doesn't break the other
The mistake that takes sites offline
In our study of 836 Hong Kong small-business websites, 19.6% of listed sites no longer worked and 11.4% pointed to a domain that no longer exists. A domain registered in someone else's name, with nobody responsible for renewing it, is one common way that happens. Register the domain yourself, keep the login, and turn on auto-renew.
How Kodinav handles hosting
We don't resell hosting or mark it up. When we build a site, the hosting and domain are opened in your company's name and billed to you at cost, and we set up the CDN, SSL and backups. If you'd rather not look after it, care plans start at HK$390 a month and include renewals, updates, backups and monitoring.

Close to your visitors, or behind a global CDN: a Hong Kong or Singapore region, or a CDN with Hong Kong edge locations, keeps pages fast.
Ask for a transfer to your company's account. If they're unreachable, contact the registrar with your company documents to prove ownership; start early, before it lapses.
